New Feature in Shopify POS: Shipping and Pickup in a Single Order

  • April 08, 2025

Shopify has improved the point-of-sale (POS) experience with a new feature: staff can now create a single order that combines items to be picked up directly from the store and items to be shipped to the customer's home.

What's new?
  • Delivery methods per item : Each item in the cart can have its own delivery method. It's no longer necessary to separate orders based on in-store pickup or shipping. This allows for mixed orders—some items are picked up immediately, while others are shipped to your home.
  • Mixed inventory sales : You can sell in-store products alongside out-of-stock products (which will be shipped later), expanding customer choice and leveraging inventory across your entire store network.
  • Discounts and combo pricing : By consolidating products into a single cart, bundle pricing or discounts are applied to the entire order, optimizing staff time and improving the customer shopping experience.
How does the Shipping and Pickup feature work?
  • Quantity Limitations : Products of the same type (variant) cannot be split between different delivery methods. If a product is both in a combo and as a standalone item, both must share the same delivery method.
  • Tax Engine Support : This feature is only supported for Avalara 2.0, Vertex, or registry-based taxes (excluding US, EU, and UK stores). ShopifyTax support is coming soon. Please check your settings to take advantage of this improvement.
  • Regional shipping restrictions : All items in a delivery order must be in the same tax region (set up in your Shopify admin). Within the European Union, you can ship across borders using a unified tax engine.
  • Email Templates : The default templates (Order Confirmation, Invoice, Order Edit, POS/Mobile Receipt, and New Order Notification) will automatically update to reflect which items are being shipped and which are being picked up. If you're using custom templates, you'll need to update them manually.

The result? A more flexible shopping experience for your customers and a simpler checkout process for your team.
